SimCity: The beginning of an era
"SimCity" was already published by Maxis in 1989 and is therefore older than "The Sims", which was also published by Maxis. The Sims only came out at the turn of the millennium. In fact, The Sims took inspiration from SimCity. New fans of the two simulations are often unaware of this since the origins of the two games go back so far.
This is what the SimCity reboot from 2013 looks like.
As SimCity just couldn't keep up with the competition, Maxis was forced to close in 2015. The Sims has since been acquired by EA, but that marked the end for SimCity.
Where else can you play the game today?
For many gamers, SimCity is still one of those games that have a high nostalgia factor. That's why many players still want to get back into their old favorites and relive the past. The original SimCity got a reboot in 2013, which can currently be purchased on EA's official store, Origin. This newer version will only cost you about five euros.
The original 1989 SimCity, on the other hand, appears to have been lost in time. However, if you're lucky, you can still find the game on Amazon or eBay. However, caution is advised here, as the old game often cannot be read by modern PCs and consoles. So make sure when buying that you also have the necessary funds to play the game. You can also download the game for free on some sites, but as with any download, caution is advised. To make sure the site is legitimate, it often helps to search the site's name and look for reviews. You can often find out quickly whether a download from the site is safe. A safe site to find the SimCity Classic download is PC World.
What alternatives are there to SimCity?
If you like the concept of the city builder but would like to work with modern graphics and game mechanics, there are quite a few alternatives on the market these days. Cities Skylines in particular hits the tone that the developer of SimCity was striving for at the time. Cities Skylines is an extremely realistic simulation that is technically up to date. It can offer all aspects of SimCity and more.
Bring your dream city to life in Cities Skylines.
In the end, the best thing about the game isn't just the graphics. Cities Skylines boasts an active modding community that is always bringing out new, creative content for the game. Downloading this content is completely free of charge and safe and easy via the Steam Workshop. You can quickly sink into the city planning of Cities Skylines and spend hours creating the perfect neighborhood. The game offers various challenges as well as a sandbox mode in which there are no limits to your creativity. You can play Cities Skylines on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The city simulation can also be bought for the Switch. However, the PC version is particularly recommended, as it offers the most customization options.
