E-book readers are becoming increasingly popular and offer more and more features. Keeping track of the selection is not that easy. Stiftung Warentest tested eight models. We present the 5 best in the test and also reveal which e-book reader did best in the CHIP test center.
E-book readers are particularly useful on vacation: With them, travelers can read lots of stories without having to lug around heavy books. But the selection is large: The best known are probably the e-readers from Amazon, whose Kindle series is constantly growing. In addition to Amazon, there are also manufacturers such as Tolino or Pocketbook. The latter even offers devices that display comics and images in color.
Stiftung Warentest tested a total of eight e-readers in the 5/2022 issue. The result shows: A good e-reader does not have to be expensive – and there is not much to complain about in any of the tested models. The worst rating given is "satisfactory". All other devices perform "well". Five devices shared first place with a grade of 1.7.

The Amazon Kindle Oasis (2019) took first place. It got "very good" (grade 1.3) in our test and convinces with a sharp display including color temperature control, strong performance and great features. You can read the detailed test report here.
One disadvantage of the Amazon devices, which Stiftung Warentest also expresses: Those who choose the Amazon system are less flexible, according to "test". Because the Kindle devices from Amazon could not open the Epub format in the test, which public libraries often use. The selection of shops and libraries is significantly larger with Tolino, Kobo or Pocketbook. Users can borrow e-books – for example via the Onleihe or Overdrive platforms.
